Why LinkedIn profile is important?

LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, hosts the profiles of 660 million people in over 200 countries as of March 2020—and up to 47% of them are active users.

Over 30 million companies have company pages on LinkedIn. Furthermore, according to LinkedIn, there are executives from every Fortune 500 company using this social network, and 95% of those companies use LinkedIn’s licensed recruiting software to search for job candidates.

Numerous studies by entities including Microsoft, Jobvite and Career Thought Leaders, show convincingly that between 77% and 97% of staffing professionals overall use LinkedIn as a recruiting tool. They show further that approximately 70% of people making hiring decisions have decided NOT to hire a candidate based on what they’ve found online—and that a similar percentage have hired employees based on the person’s online presence. Here’s the clincher: A whopping 89% of all recruiters report having hired someone through LinkedIn (as opposed to 26% from Facebook and 15% from Twitter). So if you’re going to conduct a job search using social media, LinkedIn is the place to be. Still not convinced? According to 2018-2019 research conducted by ResumeGo, job applicants who have LinkedIn profiles are 71% more likely to get called in for an interview.

As you can see, no matter what stage of your career you’re in, having a comprehensive LinkedIn profile gives you a big leg up on those with either no LinkedIn profile or a bare-bones one. And you’re actually slightly better off NOT having a LinkedIn profile than doing a half-baked job on the one you have.

What’s crystal clear is that every single EMPLOYER or CLIENT who considers hiring you will Google you, click on your LinkedIn profile, and assess it. Whether you are a high school or college student, job seeker, company owner or other professional, your profile MUST impress your audience if you want results from this social media treasure chest. Guy Kawasaki told CNBC Make It, “If you’re not on LinkedIn, you might as well not exist in this world. Everybody needs to be on LinkedIn.”
